Robert Sobukwe

Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was born on 5 December 1924 in Graaff-Reinet, a small town in the Eastern Cape. The son of a labourer and a cook, he grew up in a family that valued education above all else. He attended Healdtown Methodist Mission School and later Fort Hare University, where he distinguished himself as a brilliant student and a charismatic leader.

Sobukwe believed that South Africa's liberation could only be achieved by Africans themselves, without the paternalistic involvement of white liberals. In 1959, he founded the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), breaking away from the ANC. The PAC's slogan, "Africa for the Africans," was both a call to unity and a challenge to the existing liberation movement.

On 21 March 1960, Sobukwe led the PAC's anti-pass campaign. In Sharpeville, sixty-nine unarmed protesters were killed by police, and the massacre shocked the world. Sobukwe was arrested for incitement and sentenced to three years in prison. The government passed a special law — the Sobukwe Clause — allowing them to detain him indefinitely beyond his sentence. He was held in solitary confinement on Robben Island for six additional years.

Released in 1969, Sobukwe was banished to the remote town of Kimberley, where he was placed under house arrest and constant police surveillance. Despite these restrictions, he continued to study law and was eventually admitted as an attorney, providing legal assistance to the poor and marginalised. His health deteriorated rapidly during his years of imprisonment.

Robert Sobukwe passed away on 27 February 1978 at the age of fifty-three, a victim of lung cancer. His funeral in Graaff-Reinet was attended by thousands. He was buried in the town where he was born. The Robert Sobukwe Road in Pretoria and the Robert Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley honour a leader who believed that Africa's freedom could only be won by Africans themselves.
